salute dell'intestino

The arrival of the holiday season often brings with it the desire to feel lighter, fitter and healthier. What is frequently overlooked, however, is the crucial role that gut health plays in achieving overall well-being.
We discuss this with Dr. Andrea Cocco, gastroenterologist at Ars Medica Clinic, to better understand how to take care of the gut while on vacation.

Dr. Cocco, why is it important to pay attention to gut health?

The gut is often referred to as our “second brain” because it has a direct impact not only on digestion, but also on our overall balance and well-being. During the summer, eating habits tend to change and there is a greater desire for lighter meals; however, intestinal issues such as bloating, constipation or diarrhea also become more frequent. Taking care of the gut during this time helps prevent discomfort and allows us to feel more energetic and in harmony with our bodies.

What are your main recommendations for patients during this period?

First and foremost, it is essential to maintain a balanced diet rich in fiber, seasonal fruits and vegetables, while limiting refined sugars, overly fatty foods and alcohol.
Proper hydration is equally important: higher temperatures lead to increased fluid loss, which can negatively affect bowel function, particularly in individuals prone to constipation.
Finally, I always advise patients to listen to their bodies. If persistent symptoms such as abdominal pain, bloating or changes in bowel habits occur, they should not be ignored.

Are there specific tests to assess gut health?

Yes, absolutely. Depending on the patient’s symptoms or age, we can perform a range of non-invasive diagnostic tests, such as abdominal ultrasound, screening for celiac disease, tests for intestinal dysbiosis, nickel allergy testing, lactose intolerance testing, and breath tests for Helicobacter pylori.
In certain cases, further investigation with endoscopic procedures such as colonoscopy may be recommended. Colonoscopy is also essential for individuals with a family history of chronic inflammatory bowel diseases or colorectal cancer. At Ars Medica, these examinations are carried out in complete safety, using state-of-the-art equipment and supported by highly qualified medical staff.

How important are stress and lifestyle factors?

They are extremely important. Stress, physical inactivity and poor dietary habits can disrupt the gut microbiota and contribute to conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome. For this reason, we promote an integrated approach to care that also takes lifestyle into account, encouraging regular physical activity, adequate rest and, when necessary, nutritional or psychological support.

A simple but effective piece of advice to start following today?

Begin with small, practical steps: drink more water, engage in at least 30 minutes of physical activity each day, limit the consumption of ultra-processed foods and take the time to eat slowly and mindfully. The gut functions best when it is not under pressure, and digestion is more efficient when it is not disrupted by haste or anxiety.

Why consult a gastroenterology specialist before traveling?

Many intestinal symptoms are underestimated or managed with do-it-yourself solutions that often worsen the condition. Consulting a specialist ensures an accurate diagnosis, a personalized treatment plan and, above all, the reassurance of being cared for by an experienced medical team.
At Ars Medica, we place the patient’s health at the center of a multidisciplinary and compassionate approach, ensuring the best possible pathway toward lasting well-being.
