What are uterine fibroids, and are they a cause for concern?

Uterine fibroids (also known as myomas) are among the most common gynecological conditions affecting women of reproductive age. These are benign growths that develop within the muscular wall of the uterus. While they are not life-threatening in the vast majority of cases, they can occasionally cause significant symptoms or interfere with fertility and pregnancy.

Understanding their nature, symptoms, and when medical intervention is necessary is essential for safeguarding your gynecological and reproductive health.

What are Uterine Fibroids?

Uterine fibroids are non-cancerous tumors that originate from the uterine muscle tissue. They are referred to as myomas because they arise from the myometrium (the muscular layer of the uterus), or fibroids due to their often dense, fibrous consistency.

These growths are incredibly common and may appear individually or in clusters. Their size can range from a few millimeters to substantial masses.

 

Impact on Pregnancy and Fertility

Which examinations are essential for a diagnosis? The primary diagnostic tool is the transvaginal ultrasound. This allows specialists to identify the fibroids, evaluate their size, number, and position, and create a comprehensive “map” of the clinical situation.

Early diagnosis is crucial for monitoring the evolution of the condition and determining if—and when—to intervene. In specific cases, further diagnostic imaging, such as an MRI, may be utilized for a more detailed evaluation.

Treatment Options

How are uterine fibroids treated? Treatment is tailored to the individual, depending on the patient’s age, symptoms, fibroid size, and desire for future pregnancy.

  • Pharmacological Treatment: Medication plays a limited role; it is often used to manage symptoms temporarily or to prepare a patient for surgery, but it is rarely a definitive solution.

  • Surgical Intervention: When necessary, fibroids can be treated via:

    • Traditional Surgery

    • Laparoscopic Surgery (Minimally Invasive)

The choice of technique is dictated by the specific characteristics of the fibroids and the patient’s overall clinical profile.
