Resurfacing protesi d'anca per giovani e sportivi

The functional expectations of patients undergoing hip replacement surgery are rapidly evolving. Today’s patients are younger, more active, and consequently demand a much higher level of mobility and performance post-surgery.

Which techniques are recommended in these cases? Dr. Amerigo Menghi, orthopedic surgeon at the Ars Medica Clinic and specialist in hip and knee joint replacement, shares his insights.

Hip Resurfacing: What Is It and Who Is It Recommended For?

“Today, advancements in both surgical techniques and modern implant materials allow us to meet the rigorous demands of younger and highly active patients. This is primarily achieved through direct anterior minimally invasive surgery and femoral head resurfacing.”

What Are the Main Advantages of Hip Resurfacing?

“Hip resurfacing involves capping the femoral head with a protective covering, which then articulates with a cup implanted inside the pelvic acetabulum.

The main benefits of this technique include:

  • Maximum Bone Preservation: It conserves the vast majority of the patient’s natural bone tissue.

  • Superior Range of Motion: It restores a biomechanical function that is virtually identical to that of a healthy natural joint.”

Why Is Hip Resurfacing Ideal for Younger Patients?

“There are two primary reasons why hip resurfacing is particularly recommended for younger, active individuals:

  1. Superior Bone Quality: Younger patients typically possess better bone density, making them ideal candidates for this procedure.

  2. Enhanced Stability: Because resurfacing utilizes a larger-diameter femoral head, it provides a broader range of motion and significantly lowers the risk of dislocation compared to standard hip implants.”

Does Hip Resurfacing Impact Post-Operative Rehabilitation?

“The post-operative recovery timeline for hip resurfacing is comparable to that of a standard total hip replacement. Patients can expect a relatively quick return to a high quality of life.”

Can Patients Return to Sports After the Procedure?

“Thanks to the resurfacing technique, patients can safely resume athletic activities just as they did prior to surgery. However, as with any joint replacement, we generally advise against high-impact contact sports, which carry a higher risk of severe trauma that could compromise the long-term success of the implant.”

How Is Technological Innovation Shaping the Future of Hip Replacement?

“The most significant advancement arriving in the coming months for hip resurfacing is the introduction of ceramic-on-ceramic bearings—where both the acetabular component and the femoral head capping are made of advanced ceramic.

This breakthrough completely eliminates potential concerns related to chromium and cobalt ion release, which was historically one of the main drawbacks associated with earlier metal-on-metal resurfacing designs.”
