WHY AN OBESITY PATHWAY?

The Obesity Pathway at Ars Medica was created to support and guide individuals with obesity towards better living conditions through comprehensive medical and health care, utilizing a multidisciplinary approach. This allows various specialists to collaborate in helping patients regain their physical and mental balance and achieve the best possible health condition.

Obesity in Italy affects approximately 11% of the adult population and over 4% of adolescents, leading to significant limitations and discomfort while substantially increasing the risk of comorbidities closely related to obesity (such as type II diabetes, hypertension, vascular diseases, early hypercholesterolemia, shortness of breath with minimal exertion, sleep apnea syndrome, hepatic steatosis and steatohepatitis up to liver cirrhosis, osteoarticular pain from early osteoarthritis due to overload, and increased incidence of malignant tumors compared to the non-obese population).

It has been well established that obesity proportionally reduces life expectancy and diminishes quality of life. Maintaining a healthy body weight is therefore crucial for preventing many diseases.

WHAT ARE THE STEPS IN THE OBESITY PATHWAY?

To start your journey, visit our facility at Via Cesare Ferrero di Cambiano, 29 or call 0636208231 for information. At the clinic, you will be welcomed by the managing doctor who will guide you through all stages of the process, ensuring you are never alone or disoriented. The managing doctor will provide all necessary information and begin with an introductory consultation. Based on your medical needs, you will be directed to the most suitable specialist for a comprehensive evaluation of your health. The pathway concludes when you achieve a better state of health and are satisfied with the results.

Our goal is not only your health but also your happiness.

THE SPECIALISTS IN THE PATHWAY

Depending on individual cases, you will benefit from the support of our specialists, including:

  • Endocrinologist: The key figure in identifying endocrine causes of obesity, such as thyroid problems or hormonal imbalances that contribute to overweight or obesity. The endocrinologist investigates potential medical complications, prescribes targeted therapies pre- and post-surgery, monitors the patient’s health, and adjusts treatment plans as needed.
  • Cardiologist: Plays a vital role in supporting patients with obesity in achieving better cardiovascular health. They assess cardiovascular risks, manage existing heart conditions, monitor heart health during weight loss, and provide advice on exercise. The cardiologist monitors parameters such as blood pressure, lipid profile, blood glucose, and family history of heart disease to ensure safe and effective weight loss.
  • Psychologist: Offers psychological support throughout the journey. The psychological approach is essential for understanding emotional and behavioral factors influencing body and weight management. Through individual counseling, the psychologist helps patients explore and address emotions, concerns, and behaviors related to eating, body image, and motivation for change. Psychological support is crucial for bariatric surgery, with a specific fitness assessment provided after about 3 or 4 individual sessions.
  • Bariatric Surgeon: Specializes in treating patients with severe and pathological excess weight. The goal is to reduce food intake by decreasing stomach volume or reducing nutrient absorption in the intestines.

Practical interventions include:

  • Intragastric Balloon: A spherical device placed in the stomach, filled with air or water, used as a transitional treatment for obesity in patients with a BMI from 25 to 35.
  • Sleeve Gastrectomy: A restrictive procedure that reduces the stomach by about 80%, decreasing appetite and increasing satiety.
  • Gastric Bypass: Creates a small stomach pouch connected directly to the small intestine, not involving the removal of any stomach or intestinal parts, and is reversible.
  • Mini Gastric Bypass: A restrictive procedure creating a small vertical gastric pouch linked to the small intestine for moderate malabsorption, reversible.
  • Revision Surgery: For patients who have had previous unsuccessful bariatric surgeries.

All procedures are performed under general anesthesia using minimally invasive techniques, ensuring shorter hospital stays, quicker recovery, and reduced postoperative pain. Postoperative management and discharge will include guidance for resuming daily activities with specific nutritional and therapeutic instructions. Patient recovery is monitored through periodic multidisciplinary follow-up. After at least 12 months, if necessary, plastic surgery interventions can correct any skin defects.
