“It’s just stress, it’ll pass”: The Phrase You Should Never Say If Symptoms Last More Than 3 Weeks
We all have a habit of putting things off.
A persistent sore throat? “It’s probably just the changing weather.” Hoarseness that won’t go away? “Just stress from the last few weeks.” A small mouth ulcer? “It’ll heal on its own.”
All too often, we dismiss the clear signals our body sends us as “nothing.” But when that “nothing” lingers for three consecutive weeks, it’s time to stop and get checked.
From September 21 to 26, 2026, Ars Medica Clinic is officially participating in the Make Sense Campaign, the European awareness drive for head and neck cancer prevention. Throughout this special week, we are offering free screening consultations led by Prof. Giovanni Almadori.
Why Head and Neck Cancers Demand Our Attention
Head and neck (or cervicofacial) cancers represent the seventh most common cancer type in Europe. Affecting regions such as the mouth, throat, nose, and larynx, these cancers are two to three times more prevalent in men and individuals over 40. However, incidence rates are increasingly rising among women and younger adults.
The primary risk factors are well established—tobacco and alcohol consumption account for roughly 75% of cases, alongside Human Papillomavirus (HPV) infection—yet the greatest obstacle remains a widespread lack of awareness.
A survey by the European Head & Neck Society (EHNS) revealed that 38% of people have never even heard of these conditions, and 3 out of 4 Italians cannot identify their main symptoms.
The Golden Rule: The 1-FOR-3 Formula
Head and neck cancer symptoms are notoriously subtle, often mimicking everyday seasonal ailments. To combat this, the Italian Association of Head and Neck Oncology (AIOCC) and the EHNS introduced the 1-FOR-3 Rule:
If you experience even JUST 1 of the following symptoms for 3 CONSECUTIVE WEEKS, you should consult a specialist:
-
Tongue pain, non-healing mouth ulcers/canker sores, or red/white patches inside the mouth
-
Persistent sore throat
-
Prolonged hoarseness or voice loss
-
Pain or difficulty when swallowing
-
A lump or swelling in the neck
-
A persistent block on one side of the nose and/or unusual nosebleeds
Prevention and Early Diagnosis: 3 Weeks for 1 Life
The good news? Early diagnosis holds the key to recovery.
When head and neck cancers are detected in their early stages, survival rates reach 80% to 90%. A simple, comprehensive specialist examination takes only a few minutes—yet it can completely change the course of your health.
Spotting symptoms early means protecting not just your health, but your overall quality of life.
